Diem Espresso 1
Designed at Prime for Diem
Why we created this
This project centers on a premium pod espresso machine designed to bridge the gap between high-end home espresso systems and entry-level pod machines like Nespresso or Keurig. At the heart of its innovation is a unique portafilter mechanism that punctures the pod from both the top and bottom—merging the ritual and quality of traditional espresso with the speed and convenience of pod brewing. We joined the project following the completion of its core technical development, which was led by an Italian engineering firm.
The Challenges
During the exploration phase, one of the primary challenges was optimizing the water tank’s location and usability. Front-access placement offered convenience but raised concerns around cleaning and accessibility—issues often overlooked in premium machines. Another key focus was accommodating both espresso and drip modes without compromising the machine’s identity. While many machines rely on flip-down platforms or makeshift stands to adjust for cup height, these often feel like afterthoughts and skew the perception toward drip brewing. Our goal was to ensure height adjustability felt intentional, seamless, and distinctly espresso-forward.
